The West Orange Trail is Central Florida's best ride and the standard antidote to a theme park week. Twenty-two miles of paved rail trail running from Killarney in the west, through Oakland and Winter Garden, up toward Apopka - with a downtown sitting directly on the path halfway along.
Route at a glance
Like most rail trails it is flat, well graded and consistently surfaced. It is also unusually well equipped: staffed trailheads, restrooms, water, bike racks and a genuinely useful set of mile markers.
The section everyone rides is Oakland to Winter Garden and back, roughly 8 miles round trip, because Winter Garden's Plant Street is the destination. Brick main street, a Saturday farmers market, and enough restaurants and breweries to make the ride the excuse rather than the point.
The full route
- Killarney to Oakland (about 4 miles). The western end, quiet and shaded, running close to Lake
Apopka.
- Oakland to Winter Garden (about 4 miles). Oak canopy for much of it, the best surface on the
trail, and the approach into town.
- Winter Garden downtown. The trail runs straight down the middle. Dismount zones apply through
the busiest blocks at weekends.
- Winter Garden to Apopka (about 14 miles). Longer, more open, with road crossings and some
suburban sections. This is where an e-bike changes the calculation entirely.
The Clermont option
South-west of the trail, Clermont gives you the only genuinely rolling terrain in Florida. The Lake Minneola Scenic Trail and the South Lake Trail connect toward the West Orange system, and the hills around Clermont are steep enough that Florida's cycling teams train on them.
On a pedal bike, that terrain is a serious ride. On an e-bike it is a pleasant afternoon with views you cannot get anywhere else in the state.
Shade, heat and timing
The Oakland stretch has genuine oak canopy, which makes it one of the more comfortable summer rides in Central Florida. East of Winter Garden the shade thins out.
Weekend mornings are busy through Winter Garden, especially on farmers market days. Ride early or ride midweek.
Trailheads and parking
The staffed trailheads at Killarney Station and Winter Garden Station are the practical starting points, with parking, water and restrooms. Downtown Winter Garden has street parking that fills fast at weekends - the trailhead lots are the better bet.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the West Orange Trail?
About 22 miles of paved rail trail between Killarney and Apopka, running through Oakland and Winter Garden. Most riders do the Oakland to Winter Garden section, which is roughly 8 miles round trip.
Is the West Orange Trail good for families?
Yes - it is one of the best family rides in Florida. It is flat, separated from traffic, well signposted, and it ends in a town with ice cream. The Oakland stretch has the most shade and the fewest crossings.
Can you ride e-bikes on the West Orange Trail?
E-bikes are commonly ridden here and local shops rent them. As with all Florida shared-use paths, the rules are set locally and can change, and faster Class 3 bikes are the ones most often restricted. Ask your rental shop for the current position.
Where do I rent an e-bike for the West Orange Trail?
Winter Garden is the obvious base, with shops close to the trail and to Plant Street. Clermont covers the hillier southern routes, and there are options in the wider Orlando area if you are staying near the parks.
Is the West Orange Trail worth it if I am visiting Orlando for the theme parks?
It is the single best half day off you can take from the parks. Winter Garden is about twenty minutes from the main resort areas, and the contrast - a quiet brick main street and an oak-shaded trail - is the point.
