The 10 Best E-Bike Rides in Florida

Ten Florida rides that are better on an e-bike, from the Timpoochee Trail on 30A to Shark Valley, the Legacy Trail, Key West and the Pinellas Trail.

Florida is flat, which people assume makes an e-bike unnecessary. What flat Florida actually has is distance, heat and wind — three things pedal assist solves completely. These are the rides where renting an e-bike changes what is possible in an afternoon.

1. The Timpoochee Trail, 30A

Roughly 19 miles one way, paved, flat. The best-known e-bike ride in the state, running the full length of 30A past Grayton Beach, Seaside, Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach. Beach accesses, coffee stops and restaurants the whole way, which is why families ride sections of it rather than the whole thing. Busy in season; ride early.

Rent in Santa Rosa Beach.

2. Shark Valley Loop, Everglades National Park

15 mile paved loop. One of the most extraordinary rides in North America: a flat loop through sawgrass prairie, alligators sunning themselves on the verge, and an observation tower at the halfway point. The full loop on a regular bike in August is an endurance event. On an e-bike it is a morning. Bring water, sun cover and patience for wildlife on the path.

Rent in the Miami area.

3. Key West, end to end

About 8 miles across, endlessly more if you wander. Key West is the single best town in Florida to explore by e-bike: compact, flat, terrible for parking, and full of one-way streets that make driving slower than riding. Old Town, the Southernmost Point, Fort Zachary Taylor and Smathers Beach link together into an easy loop.

Rent in Key West.

4. The Legacy Trail, Sarasota to Venice

About 20 miles, paved rail trail. A genuine long-distance ride with shade, bridges and a well-maintained surface, running south from Sarasota through Osprey and Nokomis into Venice. The extension north into downtown Sarasota makes an out-and-back of 40 miles realistic on assist.

Rent in Sarasota or Venice.

5. The Pinellas Trail, St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs

Around 45 miles end to end. Florida's flagship rail trail. Most riders do sections: St. Pete to Dunedin is the popular stretch, ending at a town built for a mid-ride lunch. Dunedin to Tarpon Springs adds sponge docks and Greek bakeries.

Rent in St. Petersburg or Dunedin.

6. Sanibel Island

About 25 miles of dedicated shared-use path. Sanibel's path network is separated from the road for nearly its entire length, which makes it one of the most relaxed family rides in Florida. The ride out to the lighthouse and back, with a stop at Ding Darling, fills a morning comfortably.

Rent on Sanibel.

7. Miami Beach and the Venetian Causeway

8 to 12 miles depending on the loop. Beach Walk from South Pointe north, then across the Venetian Causeway toward the city with the skyline on one side and Biscayne Bay on the other. The causeway is the highlight — a chain of low bridges and islands with far less traffic than the MacArthur.

Rent in Miami Beach.

8. St. Augustine, old town and the island

5 to 15 miles. Ride the historic district early before the crowds, then cross the Bridge of Lions to Anastasia Island for beach access and the lighthouse. The bridge is the reason to be on an e-bike; the historic district is the reason to be on a bike at all, given how little parking exists.

Rent in St. Augustine.

9. Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach

10 to 20 miles. Downtown Fernandina, the shrimp docks, and a run south along the island past Fort Clinch. Quiet roads, big oaks, and a genuinely different feel from the rest of coastal Florida.

Rent in Fernandina Beach.

10. The West Orange Trail, Winter Garden

22 miles, paved. Central Florida's best ride and the antidote to a theme-park week. Winter Garden's downtown sits directly on the trail, with a brick main street, a farmers market and enough restaurants to justify the ride on its own.

Rent in Winter Garden.

Choosing a ride for your group

Riding with children under 10: Sanibel, the western end of the Timpoochee Trail, and the West Orange Trail out of Winter Garden. Wide, separated from traffic, easy to bail out early.

First time on an e-bike: anywhere with a rail trail. The Legacy and Pinellas trails have long uninterrupted sections where you can get used to the assist before dealing with junctions.

Heat management: the Pinellas and Legacy trails have real shade. Shark Valley and the 30A corridor have very little — ride those before 10am in summer.

One ride to convince a sceptic: Shark Valley. Nothing sells pedal assist like covering 15 miles of Everglades in the time it would have taken to walk two.

Before you go

Check where your rental's class is allowed — some trail systems restrict Class 3 e-bikes. Confirm battery range against your planned distance, take more water than you think, and start earlier in the day than feels necessary. See Florida e-bike laws for the rules that apply on shared paths.
